It’s Giving Tuesday! Need some ideas on how to participate?
If you’re wondering what #GivingTuesday is… following the consumerism that comes with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is an international effort to turn some focus onto giving back before the holiday season. Since 2012, people all around the world have made efforts to volunteer and give back. Last year, over $100 million was raised for charitable organizations due to Giving Tuesday efforts.
If you don’t have a volunteer project set up today, not to worry. Here are some great ideas that combine gift giving and charity. In our family, every year part of the kids’ gift budget goes to a charitable gift. One of our favorites is KIVA, a company that provides microloans to people in disadvantaged areas that helps them earn income and improve their communities. The kids get a KIVA gift card and then they go online and evaluate potential recipients and choose a cause that supports their concerns. It’s a great way for kids to see what people are dealing with around the world and helps them appreciate their own holiday gifts a lot more.
Lots of these companies offer special matching gifts if you shop today, Giving Tuesday. And, most also offer a way to give a gift in someone else’s name and print a special note that you can wrap up and give at the holidays. I once donated to the ASPCA in my mother-in-law’s name, printed and wrapped the certificate, and she cried she was so moved. Best gift I ever gave her.
5 Ideas for Giving Tuesday
Here are some of my favorite Giving Tuesday sites, though there are tons of them out there.
Kiva provides microloans to people around the world who use the money for education, building a business, planting crops and more. And, once the borrower pays back the money, you can relend it over and over. Consider giving a gift card and the recipient can research and choose who they’d like to donate to based on criteria like agriculture, education, women’s groups and more. Today for Giving Tuesday, when you spend $50, you get $25 to make a loan yourself.
World Vision This renowned organization provides disaster relief, education assistance, sponsors children, installs clean water wells and more. Consider buying a gift card and wrapping the card along with a gift catalog. The recipient can choose the gift they would like to give, from a water well in Africa to school supplies for Americans living in poverty. Today for Giving Tuesday, any gift given to World Vision will be matched with a product donation from Thirty-One Gifts.
