The accompanying workbook includes all the lyrics, some fun worksheets, and ideas for interactive activities to help children truly understand these life lessons.
One of my personal favorites is “The Golden Rule”, a song about treating others with respect. I find myself bopping along like a cowboy while repeating
“You just do to others what you
Would like them to do to you;
Yeah, that’s what we’ll do.
Just like my momma said, clear as I can recall,
She said, “Say somethin’ nice or nothin’ at all.”
Teachers, guidance counselors, parents—these songs are a great way to help kids learn about good traits, and to keep reminding themselves all day long, without even knowing they’re learning!
Teaching good character through songs
Why teach good traits through songs? One obvious reason is that we remember things better through songs. My nine-year old son can recite all 50 states, provided he is doing it to a little jingle he learned at school. Dr. Mac suggests that we remember song lyrics so well because music lights up a variety of brain centers including language, hearing, and rhythmic motor control. He says, “Music ‘tickles’ the brain in a highly pleasurable way. It releases endorphins that provide feelings of happiness and energy.” Whatever the reason, I know that once I play the H-O-N-E-S-T-Y song in the car, my kids are going to remember “you can get more freedom, and you can get respect, And a little more trust, is just what you’d expect.” And wouldn’t that be a great lesson to have them humming over and over?
Importance of teaching good character traits
Dr. Mac, or Don MacMannis, PhD if we’re being formal, isn’t just a song writer, he’s been a child psychologist for 40 years and these songs are based on his real experiences helping children learn to get along well in the world. Dr. Mac (along with a whole bunch of other experts) will tell you that social emotional intelligence is as important for kids to learn as math or reading. Knowing how to treat others and one’s self with consideration is essential to success in relationships at home and in business. But did you know that studies show kids who receive education in social emotional issues also increased their academic achievement? So, go download a couple songs and who knows, you just might encourage more honesty, respect, and responsibility, along with better test scores.
